PS, another great city is Merida, four hours by bus from Cancun. Some day I'll also get to Zacatecas, another such destination on my list. I applaud United for offering flights to so many interesting cities in Mexico, with their little jets for the little airports. In Guanajuato, you get your exercise! I need that. I'd return to any of them in a heartbeat. But SMA and Qro have a lot in common with them - all have attractive and walkable centros, with old-European architecture, good food, cozy boutique hotels, and a mellow, happy vibe. Guanajuato is, I think, tied with Oaxaca in my personal list of favourite places in Mexico. There's also a nice viewpoint of the aqueduct if you walk a bit east from there, it's uphill a bit, and if you wander (always fun by itself) you may come across it. In Queretaro, the centro is beautiful, with lots of parks and pedestrian-only streets scattered around in a compact area.
